A Summer Assemblage, Atlanta Collage Society Group Show

A collage, from the French word coller, to glue, is a formal work of art, made from an assembly of different forms and mediums to create a new whole. Sometimes abstract or representational, sometimes incredibly realistic, always texturally interesting, this artform began to make an appearance in the early 20th century; the term collage was jointly coined by Picasso and Braque, introducing a distinctive form of modern art.

Opposites Attract

Artist Statement
On the individual level, a strong sense of place supports our feeling of personal identity encompassing cherished aspects of a place both physical and interpersonal. An intimate viewpoint of place combines the personal understanding of that place along with the emotional attachment to it. Place can be defined in a geographical or emotional sense and is unique to each of us. Shifting viewpoints from a global orientation to a personal one, I utilize the contrasting shapes of the circle and square along with a complimentary color scheme of blue and orange to portray the beautiful interactions that can happen when opposites are placed together in harmony. [This series is dedicated to my husband, Mark]

Summer Update

Family and friends,
Happy July! I hope you are enjoying the summer and relaxed pace that the season brings. It has been a busy spring and I wanted to give an update on my art activities.

New Work
Since last fall, I have focused all my artistic efforts on mixed media and really love the results. As you’ll recall, my series “Interdimensional” focused on circles; my series “Aerial” focused on squares; so my latest series of nine new pieces titled “Opposites Attract” is a combination of the two – both circles and squares. As circles and squares are exact opposites, I also used the complimentary colors blue and orange along with black and white to accentuate the differences and highlight the harmony than can be found in dissimilarity. Read my artist statement for this new series on my blog.

Exhibitions
In keeping with the slower pace of the season, I have a light exhibition schedule this summer.

New Publication
My work was selected this spring to be part of a book titled “FORM: Artistic Independence 2008.” The 11x17 independent, locally published first-of-its-kind, art/design coffee table book is described as “…an artbook of emerging and established local Atlanta creative minds.” I was very pleased to be included in this project. Note that a 6x9 version will be available by August at www.amazon.com.

Studio Visits
If you are interested in scheduling an appointment for a studio tour and to view my work in person, please give me a call so we can arrange a convenient time.

Commissions
If you are looking for a special piece of art but don’t see exactly what you want on my website, please talk with me about a commission.

Thanks to each of you for your positive feedback and encouragement. Have a wonderful summer!!

Spring Update

Family & friends,
A sense of place is a universal concept that each of us can understand. Exploring different locations, whether mentally or physically, adds color and richness to our individual journeys and broadens how we think about our world. As I reflected on my artwork this winter, it became clear that “place” has become a very important focus in my current work and has been a recurring theme through the years. So, I decided to make it official and developed my universal artist statement around my personal viewpoint of place. You can read the entire statement on my blog

New Work
Focusing on the universe and space in my last series, it seemed natural for me to turn around and study our world along with its infrastructure and interpret that visually. Loosely representing a topographical viewpoint in my newest series “Aerial,” I layered the shape of the square and the straight lines of our cities along with the repeating grid patterns of our streets and highways to designate the manmade framework in which we live.

Over the winter I also finished an additional piece in my Interdimensoonal series titled “Another Time Another Space.” I hope you will enjoy viewing all my new work.

News
In February, the “Drawn” mixed media group exhibition at Limelight Gallery garnered a very positive response and I am pleased to share that 34 total pieces were sold including six of my mixed media drawings. It was very encouraging to all the artists involved and it was wonderful personally to receive such positive recognition.
